Mapping the Missouri River from Niobrara State Park, Nebraska to Pickstown, South Dakota

The Chief Standing Bear Memorial Bridge - Crosses the Missouri National Recreational River between Niobrara, NE and Running Water, SD. The Chief Standing Bear Overlook offers panoramic views and dramatic vistas that the Missouri River displays. Bring your camera… great photo opportunities.

Sites on the Nebraska Side:

Niobrara, Nebraska - Kreycik River View Elk & Buffalo Ranch --  Elk & Buffalo Tours>>  Don't miss this opportunity for a two hour covered wagon touring experience!

Lynch, Nebraska – Old Baldy. The expedition spent most of September 7, 1804 digging for “barking squirrels” near this hill. Their hard work paid off with an animal that survived the trip all the way to Fort Mandan, then back down river to Washington DC for President Jefferson.   The land is privately owned however, you will have the opportunity to view via the Old Baldy Overlook.  While in Lynch stop by Ponca Valley Oil Company and pick-up the official Lynch Dawg.

Fort Randall Historic Site - Built in 1856 on the south side of the river just below the dam, was established to keep peace on the frontier and served as a major navigation link to the Missouri River. The fort was abandoned in 1892, but the remains of the old parade ground, excavations of foundations of buildings and the standing ruins of the old chalkstone chapel are still visible.  Sitting Bull was a prisoner here for a short time following his surrender in Canada.

Karl Mundt National Wildlife Refuge - Eagle and wildlife viewing ... peaceful and serene setting.

Sites on the South Dakota Side:

Yankton Sioux Treaty Monument - The 1858 Treaty Monument stands on a hill overlooking the Missouri River and the site of the old Yankton Sioux Agency at Greenwood, South Dakota. The monument was erected to honor the Chiefs who took part in the signing of the 1858 treaty between the US Government and the Yankton Sioux Tribe.

Marty, South Dakota - St. Paul's Historic Cathedral on the Prairies.  This magnificent tribute to architecture and art serves as a pilgrimage site for Christian worshippers and a place worth a stop for travelers along the state's back roads. Most eye-catching of all are the stained glass windows. Illuminated from the south by a late-morning sun during a glorious autumn day, 18 scenes are shown including the seven sacraments, usually with Indians accepting Christ from a white member of the clergy.  More information call:  Sister Pat of the Oblate Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, 605-384-3305

Wagner, South Dakota -  Fort Randall Casino & Hotel.  Roll the dice or have lunch at the restaurant.  Great Indian Tacos.
